VCS Foundation also undertakes molecular microbiology testing across a range of other areas including respiratory viruses and sexually transmitted infections.

About the Role:

Contribute to the development, implementation and improvement of the VCS Quality System and ensure compliance with documented procedures and processes.  Report non-conformances and complaints, and where required, take appropriate action according to documented Quality System procedures.

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Perform the daily operations of all areas of the Molecular Microbiology Laboratory as rostered.
  • Perform all Molecular Microbiology Laboratory procedures
  • Supervising students and visitors within the Molecular Microbiology Laboratory
  • Provide technical training for students and Molecular Microbiology Laboratory staff
  • Monitor safe work practices in the Molecular Microbiology Laboratory
  • Completion and authorisation of final reports according to VCS Work Practices.
  • Assist the Molecular Supervisor to develop, document, implement and review Molecular Microbiology Laboratory Procedures and associated work instructions.
  • Coordinate the storage and disposal of post-analysis specimens in compliance with NPAAC requirements.
  • Assist in monitoring of safe work practices in the laboratory in consultation with the Molecular Supervisor.
  • Perform and monitor suitable internal quality control measures for Molecular Microbiology Laboratory procedures
  • Perform and monitor suitable external quality control measures as required for Molecular Laboratories procedures
  • Maintain equipment and equipment logs
  • Assist the Director of Molecular Microbiology in producing research output, including but not limited writing manuscripts for submission to peer- reviewed scientific journals
  • Participation in VCS continuing education activities.
  • Participation in internal and external Quality Assurance activities

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Tertiary qualification in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
  • Experience in a general medical or pathology laboratory or equivalent
  • Knowledge of the regulations governing the handling and storage of Dangerous and Hazardous materials
  • Knowledge of safe handling and storage techniques for biohazardous material
  • Familiarity with PC applications including spreadsheets and word-processing 
  • Familiarity with pathology laboratory regulatory provisions, NPAAC and NATA
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Well-developed customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work within a high volume workload
  • Demonstrated record of producing papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • High standard of record keeping skills and knowledge of NATA as well as Microsoft programs (Excel/Word/ PowerPoint)
